Gag order issued in Riggs trial

Citing the effort to insure a fair trial, 35th District Judge Stephen Ellis issued a gag order in the Capital Murder trial of 21 year old Ryan Riggs, who could possibly face the death penalty for the 2016 murder of Chantay Blankenship near her North Lake Brownwood home. Ellis’ order restricts comments from law enforcement officials, prosecutors, defense attorneys and family members to the media.

Since Riggs could face the death penalty, Judge Ellis appointed the Regional Public Defender’s office in Lubbock to represent Riggs in court. District Attorney Michael Murray has not announced whether his office will seek the death penalty.
