FEMA releases new flood insurance maps, appellate process released

The Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has published a notice in the Federal Register for the revised Preliminary Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM) and Flood Insurance Study (FIS) covering the City of Brownwood and Brown County. Copies of the FIRM and FIS can be found at the following website: http://www.fema.gov/preliminaryfloodhazarddata or can be viewed at Brownwood City Hall in the Engineering office.

Publication in the Federal Register and two public notifications in the Brownwood Bulletin begins the 90 day appeal period for the revised preliminary FIRM and FIS. During this 90 day appeal period, any owner or lessee of real property within the City of Brownwood may appeal to the City of Brownwood. All appeals must contain information indicating that the proposed FIRM or FIS are scientifically or technically incorrect. Only appeals of the proposed FIRM or FIS supported by scientific or technical data can be considered before FEMA makes its final flood hazard determination at the end of the 90 day appeal period. Appeals may be submitted to Jodie Kelly, Floodplain Administrator, City of Brownwood.

As this process continues, updates will be issued via press releases to the media, City website www.brownwoodtexas.gov, and City of Brownwood Facebook page.
